Information on Discipline and Tribunal Hearings

Gilmer County School System is committed to ensuring that our schools provide a safe and orderly environment in which teaching and learning take place each day. Safe, supportive school environments depend on students, staff and parents demonstrating mutual respect. The Student Services division works directly with schools to provide a range of supports to establish and maintain safe and orderly schools and to promote positive school climate and culture.

The Assistant Superintendent for Student Services provides leadership and support to school administrators regarding Student Discipline issues. Responsibilities include: appeals to the Board, State Board, and courts; contact for school administrators on Code of Student Conduct interpretation and application; enrollment of students with discipline orders from other school systems; permanent expulsion; and training for administrators participating in discipline hearings.

All members of the school community - students, staff and parents - must know and understand the standards of behavior which all students are expected to live up to and the consequences if these standards are not met. Gilmer County School System Code of Student Conduct provides a comprehensive description of unacceptable behavior and consequences, including incidents involving drugs or weapons. The code applies to all students, including those with disabilities. The Discipline Code is updated each year and made available to all students and stakeholders.

The maintenance of order and security in and around our schools is essential to creating learning environments to which students can meet high academic standards, educators can teach towards those standards, and parents can be assured that their children are learning in a safe and positive school setting.
